Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Mount St. Joseph

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Jordan Brett had three hits, a home run and five runs batted in to lead the Covenant softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Scots hung on in the first game 7-6 and then claimed a game two victory 5-4.

Covenant is now 2-2 on the year, while Mount St. Joseph drops to 0-2.

GAME ONE - Covenant 7, Mount St. Joseph 6

Brett was 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in and the Lady Scots survived a five-run seventh by the visiting Lions to take game one 7-6.

After falling beinhd 1-0 going to the bottom of the second, Covenant tied the score with an RBI double from Morgan Strennen with one out in the bottom half of the second. The Lady Scots then took the lead for good in the bottom of the third as Brett produced an RBI with an infield single follwoed by RBI doubles from Madison Quirk and Kendall Whann to make it 4-1.

The Lady Scots added to their lead in the fifth when Brett connected on her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, to make it 6-1. Whann delivered another run-scoring hit with a bunt single later in the inning that score Lauren Johns that gave Covenant a 7-1 edge.

Mount St. Joseph scored five runs in the sseventh, but Cori Hilt was able to get the final out with two runners on to seal the win.

Hilt (1-1) went all seven frames and allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out three. Ashley Moore (0-1) picks up the loss for the Lions after she allowed seven earned runs in six innings of work.

Whann went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in for the Lady Scots. Morgan Lane also produced two hits in four at-bats.

Makayla McClurg led Mount St. Joseph with a 2-for-3 game one and an RBI.

GAME TWO - Covenant 5, Mount St. Joseph 4

In the day's second game, Covenant scored three runs in the first and two more in the second and then once again had to hold on late for a 5-4 victory.

Hannah Rogers (1-1) went the distance in the circle for Covenant as she allowed just one earned run on five hits. Rogers struck out two and threw 96 pitches.

The Lady Scots pounced on the visiting Lions in the first inning with three runs. Covenant loaded the bases with two outs and Quirk came through with a bases-clearing double to center field that score Brett, Lane and Kaitlyn Sirmons

Mount St. Joseph scored two runs of its own in the second on an RBI single from Morgan Hoehn and a bases loaded walk to Mallory Wright. But the Lady Scots responded with two more runs in the bottom of the second to extend the lead to 5-2 as Brett laced a double to right field that scored both Chandler Shepherd and Meagan Hess.

The Lions added a run in the fifth and one more in the seventh before being turned away by Rogers as she got Erica Parker to strikeout swinging to end the game.

Lane went 3-for-4 in the second game with a run scored. Quirk finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Hess and Brett added one hit apiece.

Megan James (0-1) gets the loss for the Lions as she went six innings allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Five different players had one hit offensively for Mount St. Joseph.

Covenant will return to action next Friday (Feb. 28) with a USA South doubleheader against Greensboro. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
