Softball Swept in Season Opening Doubleheader

ROME, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team began the 2014 season on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Scots fell twice to a tough Berry squad by scores of 17-1 and 4-1. Covenant is 0-2 on the season, while Berry improves to 4-0.

In the first game, Covenant was led offensively by Madison Quirk's 3-for-3 performance. Freshman Jordan Brett went 2-for-3 with an RBI in her collegiate debut. Chandler Shepherd, Kaitlyn Sirmons and Lauren Johns each added a hit apiece.

Berry scored eight runs in the first inning and cruised from there. Sara Vigue was 2-for-2 with four RBIs for the host Vikings. Andrea Cole (2-0) picked up the win for Berry by going all five innings and surrendering one run on eight hits.

Cori Hilt (0-1) allowed four earned runs in two innings of work.

In the second game, the Lady Scots hung with the Vikings but the hosts got another strong pitching performance in the win. Kayla Davis (1-0) went all seven innings and allowed one run on seven hits.

Quirk went 1-for-3 and six other Lady Scots got a hit (Shepherd, Brett, Morgan Lane, Anna Verwey, Kendall Whann and Meagan Hess). Quirk finished the day going 4-for-6.

Hannah Rogers (0-1) pitched valiantly as she worked six innings allowing four earned runs and striking out two.

Covenant will open up the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, Feb. 22 against Mount St. Joseph (Ohio).
