DECATUR, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team wrapped up its regular season on Saturday afternoon with a trip to Decatur to face GSAC foe Agnes Scott. The host Scotties scored five runs in the third and four more in the fifth to take game one 11-3 in five innings. In game two, it took nine innings before Agnes Scott came away with a 3-2 victory.
Covenant ends the regular season with a 6-28 record and 5-11 in GSAC play. The Lady Scots will now gear up for the NCCAA Mid-East Regional Tournament beginning on May 1 in Jackson, Tenn.
Game One: Agnes Scott 11, Covenant 3
The Lady Scots took a 3-2 lead after 2.5 innings, but Agnes Scott rallied with five runs in the third and four more in the fifth to claim game one of the doubleheader.
After falling behind 2-0 after two innings, Covenant scored three times in its half of the third. Chandler Shepherd singled and later stole second base, but was still stuck at second with two outs. Courtney Wagoner delivered a single to left field that allowed Shepherd to come across. Lauren Johns followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Morgan Lane and Madison Quirk plated two runs with RBI singles each.
But Agnes Scott would answer with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the third. Shivani Ghodadra capped the inning with a two-run double to left field that gave the Scotties a 7-3 edge.
The Scotties added four more runs in the fifth as Avi Greene's two-run home run ended the contest.
Cori Hilt (4-12) is hit with the loss for Covenant as she went all four-plus innings. The Lady Scots produced nine hits with two apiece for Wagoner, Lane, and Quirk.
Game Two: Agnes Scott 3, Covenant 2 (9 innings)
Scotties' Megan Snipes singled home Kat Riale with one out in the bottom of the ninth as Agnes Scott took a 3-2 win in extra innings to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The extra inning affair was the first for Covenant since April 11, 2012 when the Lady Scots fell to Berry 9-6 in nine innings.
Covenant starter Hannah Rogers (1-11) put in a tremendous effort in the circle for the Lady Scots. Rogers went 8.1 innings allowing just three runs while scattering 12 hits and striking out a pair.
Covenant took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Jenni Jobe doubled to lead off the frame and Johns followed with a two-run home run, her first of the season, to left field.
Agnes Scott would tie the score in the bottom of the fourth with the big hit coming on a run-scoring single from Ghodadra.
From the fifth inning on, it was the pitchers who controlled the game until the bottom of the ninth.
Casey Arnold picks up the pitching win for Agnes Scott as she went seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits.
Shepherd and Jobe each had a pair of hits for the Lady Scots. Covenant had eight hits a team. Johns finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
