Hirte and Wagoner Named Covenant Players of the Week

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Men's tennis player John Hirte and softball first baseman Courtney Wagoner have been named Covenant Players of the Week for the week of March 26-31. It is the second time this season that Hirte has been awarded this honor, while Wagoner is a first-time winner.

A senior from Maple Grove, Minn., Hirte won both of his singles matches and both doubles matches against conference opponents last week. Hirte ousted Maryville College's Zach Clark 6-0, 6-3 and teamed with Jonathan Herberich to defeat Clark and Jimmy Fulton 8-3 in doubles play. The senior took out Huntingdon College's Zac Baldwin 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday, while again joining forces with Herberich to record another doubles win, 8-6. Hirte is 6-1 on the year in singles play, including a perfect 5-0 against GSAC teams, and has won five straight matches.

Wagoner, a junior from Cummings, Ga., batted .350 with a home run and four RBIs over the course of six games last week as Covenant went 3-3. The junior's best games came in the Lady Scots' doubleheader sweep of Judson College. Wagoner went 2-for-3 in game one with a home run and then went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs in a game two win. For the year, Wagoner is hitting .463 with a pair of homers, 19 RBIs, and an on-base percentage of .566
