MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Two home runs from Beth Harris lifted the Covenant softball team to a 9-6 win over Maryville College in game one of a GSAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, but Maryville bounced back to take game two 10-5.
Covenant moves to 20-15 overall with the day's results and 8-7 in conference games. Maryville is now 11-19 overall and 8-6 in GSAC play.
Harris went 4-for-9 on the day with two homers and four runs driven in. Harris has now hit a GSAC-leading 13 home runs on the year, seven more than the next closest player, and it would place her in a tie for second in all of NCAA Division III.
Covenant scored three times in the first and then twice in the sixth and seventh innings to erase a 6-5 deficit and win 9-6.
Harris hit her first homer of the day, a two-run shot, in the top of the first inning that brought home Jenni Jobe to give the Lady Scots a 2-0 lead. Lauren Johns followed with a double and scored on Morgan Booker's RBI single to make it 3-0.
Covenant then took a commanding 5-1 lead in the fourth inning when Harris connected on another two-run home run, scoring Christine Core.
Maryville came roaring back with a five-run fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Brittany Henry and Leah Kelly each had run-scoring hits in the inning, while Jennie Burks produced an RBI ground out.
In the sixth inning, Johns doubled home Jobe to tie the game at 6-6. Courtney Wagoner later scored on a Maryville illegal pitch to give the Lady Scots a 7-6 advantage. Covenant added two more runs in the seventh inning as Johns and Booker both drove in runs by being hit by a pitch.
Covenant starter Cori Hilt (3-4) gets the win as she went six innings and allowed four earned runs, while striking out four. Chelsea Krafft picked up her second save of the season with a perfect seventh inning. Sarah Reeder (3-10) is hit with the loss for Maryville.
Harris finished 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs. Jobe and Johns each went 2-for-4, with Jobe scoring three runs and Johns driving in two runs.
In the second game, Maryville took command with a five-run sixth inning to claim a 10-5 win and earn a doubleheader split in the process.
Covenant took a brief 1-0 lead in the second inning when Johns was able to score from third on a wild pitch. Maryville came back and scored three times in the bottom of the second and never relinquished the lead. Kalyn Jones, Kelsie Payne, and Henry each had RBI hits in the second inning.
Maryville added two runs in the fifth inning on the strength of Kelly's two-run homer. After Covenant scored twice in the top of the sixth, thanks to Chandler Shepherd's two-out, two-run single, Maryville scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 10-3.
Johns and Wagoner both went 2-for-3, with Johns driving in a run and scoring twice, in the second game for Covenant. Shepherd went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while Core, Harris, and Booker each added a hit.
Krafft (14-10) is saddled with the loss for the Lady Scots. The senior went 5.2 innings and struck out seven, but allowed seven earned runs. Maryville starter Henry (7-7) pitched a complete-game with 11 strikeouts to earn the win.
Covenant returns to action on Saturday afternoon on Lookout Mountain when they host Huntingdon College in a makeup game from March 8. Senior Day activities will take place as well with first pitch at 2 p.m.
