Lady Scots Sweep Spelman

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Lady Scots came off two big wins over Rust College on Monday and kept the momentum going as they beat the Spelman College Jaguars soundly 12-0 and 15-4 in a doubleheader at Warner Park Wednesday evening.

Covenant moves to 11-6 on the season and 4-3 in GSAC games. The Lady Scots have won six straight games. Spelman is now 1-12 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Chandler Shepherd went 5-for-7 with five runs scored and four runs batted in on the day to lead Covenant offensively. Lauren Johns went 1-for-4, but drove in three runs. Chelsea Krafft earned another pitching win with a strong outing in game one, while Beth Harris kept her pitching record perfect at 3-0 with the game two win.

Game One

Krafft (6-4) came out strong pitching the first four innings as she struck out nine batters while surrendering just one hit on 48 pitches. Kelynn Carter was given the loss for the Jaguars.

Covenant scored three times in the first inning thanks to RBIs from Harris and Johns. The Lady Scots then added three more runs in the second with an RBI single from Meagan Hess and a sacrifice fly from Christine Core to make it 6-0. Covenant would score twice in the third and four times in the fourth inning.

Shepherd and Harris led the Lady Scots offense in the first game with both going 3-for-3. Shepherd scored three runs and had one RBI, while Harris scored two runs and also one RBI.

Game Two

Harris (3-0) started for the Lady Scots and received the win as she went three innings giving up three earned runs. Grace Hooper threw two shutout innings in relief to finish the game. Hooper allowed two hits and struck out one.

Covenant scored three runs in the first inning, but found themselves down 4-3 after Spelman scored four times in the second inning. The Lady Scots responded with a nine-run second inning. Shepherd had a two-run single, Jenni Jobe singled home two as well and Johns, Courtney Wagoner, Harris, Core, and Tatum Daniel each had RBIs in the inning.

Jobe went 2-for-3 in the second game and had two RBIs while scoring one run herself. Shepherd continued to hit well, going 2-for-4, driving in three, and scoring two runs. Wagoner went 1-for-1, had one RBI, and two runs.

Covenant will hit the road for a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday against Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. Game one is set to start at 1 p.m.
