Berry Rallies to Sweep Lady Scots

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Lady Scots softball team played through some unexpected chilly, mountain air against Berry College on Wednesday afternoon. In the doubleheader, Covenant lost the first game 6-1 and then fell in the second in extra innings 9-6.

Covenant moves to 18-13 overall this season, while Berry improves to 19-9 for the year with the two wins.

Courtney Wagoner hit two home runs in the second game and finished with six runs batted in on the day. Wagoner went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, but it was not enough to get the Lady Scots a victory.

Game One

Berry outhit Covenant 15-5 in the first of the two games. Berry began to score in the top of the third inning by scoring two runs. They repeated the action in the fourth and seventh innings with two runs in each inning to come away with the 6-1 win.

The Lady Scots scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Courtney Wagoner RBI fielder's choice that scored Christine Core.

Berry starting pitcher Caillie Shamoun (13-3) was awarded the win after throwing a complete-game five-hitter. Cori Hilt (2-4) was given the loss for Covenant after allowing two earned runs in 2.1 innings.

Covenant was led offensively by Wagoner who went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Game Two

Covenant responded to the game one loss by scoring three runs in the first inning of the second game thanks to a beautiful home run by Wagoner over right field fence that scored Core and Harris to give Covenant a 3-0 lead.

Covenant scored twice more in the third as Wagoner connected on another home run, her fourth of the season, that bounced off the foul pole in left field. The two-run shot that scored Harris gave the Lady Scots a commanding 5-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Berry still trailed 5-0 but raillied for five runs to tie the game. Jessica Washington, Sara Vigue, and Kristen Stol each had RBIs in the inning. Berry tied the game at 5-5 when Covenant pitcher Chelsea Krafft struck out Courtney Hodges, but the ball got by Lady Scots catcher Jenni Jobe that allowed Stoll to score.

Berry scored four more runs in the top of the ninth to take a 9-5 lead. Covenant scored a run of its own in the bottom of the ninth as Chandler Shepherd singled home Morgan Booker with no one out. But Berry's Andrea Cole got the final three outs to record the win for the Lady Vikings.

Berry's Cole (6-6) is credited with the win as she threw seven innings and allowed two earned runs. Krafft (13-8) was saddled with the loss, despite going all nine innings and striking out seven.

Wagoner went 2-for-2, both hits being home runs and earned five RBIs to lead the Lady Scots' offense.

Covenant will play a GSAC doubleheader at Salem College on Saturday, April 14. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
