Covenant Athletic Weekly Recap: Week 26 (March 12-17)

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- This past week was full of athletic events for Covenant College's sports teams including baseball, softball, and both tennis teams.

The Lady Scots softball team first took on Piedmont College. In game one of the doubleheader, Piedmont shutout Covenant 2-0. The next game, Covenant lost 3-2. Chelsea Krafft (2-4) was given both losses with only one earned run in game two and seven strikeouts in game one. Christine Core and Jenni Jobe both went 2-for-4 to lead Covenant's offense in game one. In game two, Jobe went 2-for-3 and scored one run. Courtney Wagoner went 2-for-2 and earned an RBI.

The next doubleheader was much better for the Lady Scots. Covenant won the first 9-2 and the second 2-1 over Agnes Scott College. Chelsea Krafft (4-4) was given both wins, throwing 203 pitches in both games combined. Wagoner went 3-for-6 and had two RBIs. Morgan Booker went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Beth Harris went 3-for-7 for the games.

Baseball played on Tuesday against Oglethorpe University and beat them soundly 15-6. Every starter was able to record a hit during the game and all but one scored a run. James Rollins and Will Cleland both went 2-for-4. Covenant's offense was led by David Lockwood, who went 4-for-6, and Scott Gillespie who went 3-for-5. Demarius Johnson (2-2) was awarded the win as a relief pitcher, allowing no hits and striking out two.

The Scots then played conference foe Huntingdon College in a three game series. The first game was won by the Hawks 7-2. Gillespie had a good game again going 2-for-4. Rollins went 2-for-3. Andre Glover (1-1) was given the loss for Covenant. Glover gave up four earned runs for the afternoon.

On the following day's doubleheader, Covenant lost the first 17-5 and won the second 10-9. Gillespie led the Scots in going 4-for-6 with five RBIs. Lockwood went 2-for-4 and scored two runs and an RBI. Sterling Witt had three hits in his three at-bats and scored three runs.

Women's tennis took on Spelman College and won 7-2 on Wednesday. Anne Marie Rowe and Lauren Redberg led the Lady Scots to victory as they won both won in straight sets. Stephanie Sizemore and Madi Hyatt both won their singles matches to follow up. Hyatt and Redberg won 8-4 in doubles while Sizemore and Kelsey Whitted won theirs 8-4.

Men's tennis also played well, beating LaGrange College 8-1. John Hirte won in a straight set to start off play and won with Jonathan Herberich in their doubles match 8-4. Andy Jones and Tom Yates played together in doubles and won 8-4.

On Saturday afternoon, the Scots were not as fortunate as Huntingdon College got the win 6-3. Huntingdon won all doubles matches. Hirte, Jones, and Clark Sealy were able to win their singles matches. Jones won his match by winning the first 6-2, lost the second 4-6, then finally won 10-7 in the third set. Sealy lost the first set but came back to win the next two, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
