Covenant Athletic Weekly Recap: Week 24 (Feb. 27-Mar. 3)

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant baseball and softball teams each went undefeated, but it was the weather that came out as the biggest winner during this week's action. Rain throughout the southeast forced the postponements of three baseball games, two women's tennis matches, and a softball doubleheader.

The softball team evened up its record at 3-3 with a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee Temple on Tuesday evening. The Lady Scots won game one 13-0 before taking the second game 16-2. Beth Harris went 6-for-7 in the two games with a home run and six runs batted in. Courtney Wagoner added four hits and three runs driven in as well. Covenant outhit the Lady Crusaders 23-5 on the day.

In game one, Covenant scored six runs in the first inning and then added four more runs in the second and three more in the third. Cori Hilt picked up her first win of the season as she threw the final four innings in relief of starter Chelsea Krafft.

The second game saw the Lady Scots again jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Harris' two-run single. After Temple responded with two runs of its own, Covenant pulled away with a seven run second inning. Covenant would add seven additional runs in the final two innings to secure the win.

The baseball team also got its record back to .500 at 4-4 with a 9-7 win over Berry College on Tuesday. The Scots trailed 6-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning, but then proceeded to score four runs in the seventh and three more runs in the eighth inning to pick up the win.

In that seventh inning, Covenant got run-scoring hits from GC Marchena and David Lockwood. After Kurt Wiles reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base, Lockwood drove Wiles home with an infield single to tie the game at 6-6. In the eighth inning, Jonathan Carter's two-out, two-run double to right-center field gave Covenant a 9-6 lead.

Demarius Johnson received his first win of the season after throwing the final three innings and giving up just one run. The lefty allowed two hits, struck out three, and walked one in his outing.
