LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Backed by consecutive strong pitching performances and just enough offense, the Covenant softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Birmingham-Southern on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Scots took game one 3-1 before winning game two 3-2.
With the wins, Covenant goes over .500 for the season at 5-4. The losses for Birmingham-Southern were its first of the year and drops them to 6-2 overall.
Neither team could scratch a run across in the first game until Covenant scored three runs in the bottom of the third. Those runs would be enough for starter Chelsea Krafft who threw a complete-game to lift the Lady Scots to a 3-1 victory.
With two outs and no one on in the third inning, Christine Core walked then Jenni Jobe singled to left-center field to put runners on first and second. Beth Harris came through with a double that scored Core and gave Covenant a 1-0 lead. Courtney Wagoner followed that up with a two-run double to left-center field that brought home both Jobe and Harris and made it 3-0.
Krafft held on to that lead the rest of the game. Birmingham-Southern threatened in the top of the seventh inning, but the right-hander was able to work out of a jam and allowed just one run. Krafft (2-2) gave up 10 hits, but surrendered just the one run. She also struck out four and walked three.
Roni Ferris (1-1) was hit with the loss after she allowed all three runs in the third inning. Ferris struck out four and walked two in her outing.
Covenant had only four hits, three of which came in that third inning. Jobe and Harris each went 1-for-3 while Wagoner was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a walk.
In the second game, Harris' solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning was the difference as Covenant completed the sweep with a 3-2 win.
With two outs and nobody on, Harris took the first pitch she saw from Birmingham-Southern's Ferris and deposited it over the fence. For Harris, it was her fifth homer of the season and 14th run batted in.
Krafft then came on to pitch the final 1.1 innings in relief of Lady Scots starter Cori Hilt. Krafft earned her first save of the season by allowing one hit and punching out one batter in 30 total pitches. Hilt (2-2) picks up the win after having a solid outing. The freshman went 5.2 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits and two strikeouts.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Brittany Berkopec produced a run-scoring single and would later score herself to give Birmingham-Southern a 2-0 lead. The Lady Scots came right back with two runs of their own. Core started the inning with a single and scored on a Harris RBI single. Lauren Johns tied the game at 2-2 with a single to left field that plated Harris.
Ferris (2-2) was saddled with her second loss of the day. She came on in relief in the first inning and only allowed one hit, the Harris homer, while striking out seven.
Covenant will return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at GSAC foe Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. Game one is set for 5 p.m.
