Piedmont Sweeps Covenant

DEMOREST, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team traveled on Tuesday night to play a doubleheader against GSAC foe Piedmont College. The first game was a shut-out of 2-0 for Piedmont, while the second game the Lady Lions pulled out 3-2 in eight innings. The Lady Scots drop to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Piedmont improved to 6-4 and 2-0 in conference games.

Game One
Despite several hits and potential scoring plays, the Lady Scots could not come up with a run. Jenni Jobe advanced to second base in the top of the first, but was unable to score. In the third inning, Christine Core and Jobe were on third and second, respectively, with one out but again Covenant could not deliver.
Piedmont used this momentum to score a run in the bottom of the third. The Lady Lions scored again in the bottom of the sixth. Covenant had a chance in the top half of the seventh inning as Jobe and Meagan Hess reached base with one out. Piedmont starter Brittney Head got the final two outs, though, to end the game and the Covenant threat.
Chelsea Krafft (2-3) was given the loss, having pitched all six innings and earning seven strikeouts. Piedmont's Head (3-2) was attributed the win allowing only six hits and pitching eight strikeouts. Jobe and Core went 2-for-4 to lead Covenant's offense in game one.

Game Two
The second game was intense as Covenant fought after their loss. Neither team was able to accomplish much until the sixth inning. Covenant scored as Beth Harris crossed the plate on a Courtney Wagoner double that made it 1-0.

Piedmont responded with a run of its own in the sixth to tie tha game at 1-1. The Lady Scots regained the lead in the seventh when Lauren Johns singled home Jobe to bring the score 2-1. A Covenant error allowed Whitney Wolfe to score the tying run for Piedmont in the bottom of the inning.
This sent the game into extra innings and after Covenant came up short, Piedmont scored another unearned run to win the game 3-2.
Krafft (2-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing six hits and one earned run. Head (4-2) earned another win for Piedmont, allowing only one earned run and striking out seven.
To lead Covenant's offense, Jobe went 2-for-3 with one run. Wagoner also went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Covenant will play again on Saturday with a doubleheader against Agnes Scott College on Lookout Mountain. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
