LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- A busy schedule of competitions for Covenant this week as the spring and winter sports are playing at the same time for now. The men's and women's basketball teams finished their regular season games, while men's and women's tennis, and softball had their first events of the season.

The Lady Scots basketball team played their first game of the week against Berry College and lost 74-60. Even with a rough start, Covenant pulled off a 16-0 run to take a brief lead in the first half, but trailed by eight points going into the half. Berry cruised through the second half to come away with the win. Jessie Blankenship led the scoring with 21 points and also came up with seven rebounds.

On Saturday, the women played their final regular season game against Salem College. Margaret Cross and Terah Hooper combined to make 10 3-pointers to secure the 65-47 win over the Spirits. Covenant outplayed Salem and went into halftime with a 14-point lead thanks to a 3-pointer by Cross as the buzzer sounded. Blankenship earned another double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Covenant (6-19, 5-11 GSAC) will now await who its opponent will be in the NCCAA Mid-East Region tournament.

The men's team ended their regular season similarly as they won against Berry 63-58. Covenant led for almost the entire game. The Scots led at halftime 27-21 and extended this lead to double digits in the second half before a Berry run. Two free throws by Colton McGriff in the final seconds secured the win. Jon DeVries scored a team-high of 10 points for the Scots. Covenant (8-17) will also now wait to see who its opponent will be in the NCCAA Mid-East Region tournament.

The Lady Scots softball team began their season this week with a doubleheader against Maryville College.  The first game, Chelsea Krafft (1-0) was given the 2-0 win by throwing a complete-game shutout.  She allowed five hits, struck out six, and walked three. The second game, Maryville retaliated by winning 10-0. The Lady Scots simply could not do anything against Maryville starting pitcher Brittany Henry. Cori Hilt (0-1) was given the loss for Covenant.

Covenant's next doubleheader was against Cumberland University. The Lady Bulldogs took game one 6-5 and game two 6-2. Scott Gillespie and Chris Rollins each went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Additionally, Will Cleland and Jonathan Carter went 1-for-3 apiece.

The second game was a shutout for the Panthers, who scored in every inning except the third. Sterling Witt had the only hit for Covenant, a single, for the game. Micah Mabe (1-1) was given the loss, pitching 1.1 innings and giving up two earned runs. The final game was closer as the Panthers needed three runs in the seventh inning to take the win. James Rollins was 2-for-6 in the two games combined on Saturday. Cleland, David Lockwood, James Rollins, and Gillespie each scored for the Scots.
