CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's tennis team defeated Maryville, 8-1, on Friday evening from the Strang-Voges Tennis Complex on the campus of the McCallie School.
The match had to be moved off the mountain and indoors due to rain earlier in the morning and continued cold temperatures throughout the day.
Covenant is now 3-2 on the year while Maryville drops to 1-2 on the season.
Covenant took a sweep of doubles play to take a 3-0 advantage heading into singles competition.
Ethan Gibson and Chris Morton took an, 8-0, victory over Matthew Jackson and Carson Mattila at three doubles. Ben Luke and Gill Dunn defeated Austin Smith and Josh Fisher, 8-0, at the two spot while Logan Hull and Paxton Haggerty took an 8-2 victory over Mateus Coling and Kyle Shaver at the one.
Covenant took sweeps in five of the six matches, not dropping a game in four of them.
Hull defeated Smith 6-0, 6-0 at one singles, and Gibson took a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Shaver at the two. Dunn claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Coling at the four spot while Tyler Kelly swept Jackson 6-0, 6-0 at the five slot.
Cameron Cortmon came away victorious over Fisher, 6-1, 6-2, at four singles to complete the two-set matches.
Tristian Smallwood battled Mattila at the No. 6 but ultimately fell, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (9) to wrap up the contest.
Covenant will take on Transylvania on the mountain at 12 p.m. before returning back to McCallie for a 5 p.m. nightcap with Johnson.
