KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's tennis team swept Maryville for the first win of the season on Friday evening at Tyson Park.
Trey Wood and Cameron Cortman got the scoring started defeating Andre Matamoros and Terry Stewart 8-0 at three doubles. At the one spot, Logan Hull and Chris Morton were able to sweep their opponents before Tyler Kelly and Ben Luke defeated Cole Stinson and Egan Spoltore 8-4 to complete the doubles sweep.
Cortman continued the streak defeating Austin Smith 6-3, 6-1 to claim the fourth point of the match. Covenant (1-4, 1-1 USA South) was then able to clinch the match as Wood swept Spoltore 6-0, 6-0 at four singles.
Sam Jordan and Tristian Smallwood would not drop a game at five and six singles, respectively. Kelly defeated Beau Branton 6-2, 6-0 in the three singles match. Morton wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Stinson to complete the sweep.
This was the first time Covenant has not dropped a set since they swept Berea 9-0 last year on April 5th.
The Scots travel to Berea to take on the Mountaineers and Transylvania on Saturday at 11 a.m., and 3 p.m.
