LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Coming off back-to-back USA South West Division regular season titles, the Covenant men's tennis team seeks to continue that success into the 2019 season.
The Scots open the spring on Saturday, Feb. 9 at region foe Birmingham Southern. The home opener is set for Feb. 22 against Centre.
Under seventh-year head coach John Hirte, the Scots were picked to first in the division by the USA South coaches in the league's annual preseason poll. Although the roster looks different with Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox graduated, Covenant still possesses a talented, and deep, roster.
Even with Harvie and Cox departed, Hirte has a talented and experienced roster returning along with a freshman class that could make an immediate impact.
Top returner in junior Logan Hull looks to move into the No. 1 singles spot. Hull won 13 matches last year, mostly at the No. 3 spot, and in the fall, he became the first Covenant player to advance to the round of 16 in the main draw of the ITA regional tournament.
Trey Wood is the lone senior on the squad. Wood was a regular in the doubles lineup a season ago as he compiled 11 victories on the year. Sophomores Paxton Haggerty and Sam Jordan return for the Scots. Haggerty collected six singles wins and seven on the doubles side in his rookie season, while Jordan also saw action in both singles and doubles.
Junior Tristian Smallwood also returns for Hirte's team after he picked up three wins at the ITA regional tournament in the fall.
A recruiting class that netted four players looks to add depth and talent to the roster. Cameron Cortman, Tyler Kelly, Ben Luke, and Chris Morton add a solid presence to the lineup. All four players recorded wins (in either singles or doubles) in the ITA fall tournament.
After opening the season with a pair of road matches at Birmingham Southern and Oglethorpe, along with a neutral site contest with Guilford, the Scots play three straight at home with the opener set for Feb. 22 against Centre. During that stretch, Covenant will open USA South play against LaGrange (Feb. 23) and Piedmont (Feb. 26).
Covenant will welcome region powers Berry (March 20) and Sewanee (April 5) to Lookout Mountain in non-conference play. Senior Day is slated for March 23 against Berea.
Road trips to Piedmont (March 26), Huntingdon (April 12), and LaGrange (April 13) could prove to be key USA South matches late in the year for the Scots.
The USA South Tournament is set to begin on Friday, April 26 at LaGrange, Ga., as part of the USA South's Spring Festival.
