FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Covenant men's tennis team was once again selected as the preseason favorite in the West Division of the USA South, as the conference unveiled its preseason coaches' poll on Wednesday.

Each divisional preseason poll only includes votes from coaches within that particular division-only. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Covenant is coming off back-to-back regular season titles in the West Division of the conference. The Scots finished last season with a program record 15 victories and ranked No. 17 in the region.

It is the second straight year that Covenant has claimed the top spot in the preseason poll. The Scots, under the direction of seventh-year head coach John Hirte, collected four of the six first place votes in the division and 33 points overall to share the top spot in the poll with Piedmont. The Lions received the other two first place tallies and totaled 33 points. LaGrange (25 points), Huntingdon (20 points), and Brevard (18 points) rounded out the top five in the West Division.

In the East, N.C. Wesleyan claimed five first place votes and 25 points to be selected at the No. 1 spot. The Battling Bishops won the East Division and the USA South Tournament title last season. Methodist, Averett, Pfeiffer, and William Peace completed the top five.

Covenant opens the fall season on Saturday, Feb. 9 at region foe Birmingham Southern. The home opener is set for Feb. 22 against Centre.
