ROME, Ga. -- Covenant men's tennis junior Logan Hull advanced into the round of 16 in the main draw and several Scots picked up victories at the ITA Atlantic South Regional tournament over the weekend (Sept. 21-22) at the Rome Tennis Center.
For the event, Covenant had 10 singles wins and six more on the doubles side.
Hull became the first Covenant player in the NCAA era to win two singles matches in the main draw of the tournament. The junior defeated Belhaven's Davi Rigotti 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and then Jacob Niehaus of Millsaps 7-5, 6-4 in the second round. Hull met his match in the round of 16 as Emory's Rex Serituk took a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Freshman Tyler Kelly made a run to the championship match of his draw and went 3-1 in singles play. Kelly took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Huntingdon's Domenic Terrell in the opening round and then defeated Berry's Colt Doster 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. Kelly advanced to the championship round with his 6-2, 6-0 victory over LaGrange's Caleb Tyler in the semifinals before falling to Birmingham Southern's Hunter Hoffmeister 6-3, 6-4 in the title match.
Covenant also picked up wins in consolation rounds of draws. Tristian Smallwood ended up winning his consolation bracket by defeating Doster of Berry in the final 7-5, 6-1. Smallwod went 3-1 on the weekend and also picked up wins over Huntingdon's Zachary Taylor (6-1, 6-0) and a three-set victory over LaGrange's Mathias Vera (4-6, 6-1, 11-9).
Trey Wood collected a win over Belhaven's Grant Matherne, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round of his bracket's draw. Freshman Ben Luke notched a three-set win over LaGrange's Kyle Kelley, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) in a consolation bracket.
In doubles, the tandems of Trey Wetjen and Cameron Cortman along with Logan Hull and Chris Morton won their respective brackets. Wetjen and Cortman went undefeated and won their draw's title with an 8-6 win over LaGrange's Tyler and Josh Tullier. Wetjen and Cortman were 3-0 for the weekend.
Hull and Morton dropped to a consolation bracket after falling in their first match. But the duo went through the consolation rounds and knocked off Guilford's Kane Mills and Lance Kennedy, 8-2, to win the bracket. Hull and Morton finished 2-1 in the tournament.
Luke and Kelly also picked up a win in doubles play as they defeated Clint Robinson and Anjala Chandrasoma of Huntingdon, 8-2, in a consolation round match.
Covenant will be back in action in the spring. The Scots will open play in February and the complete schedule will be finalized soon.
