FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- For a second time this year Covenant men's tennis senior Matthew Harvie has been named the USA South Player of the Week, as the league announced its weekly accolades on Monday.
Harvie also won the honor on Feb. 19 and it is the fourth of his career. It is also the second consecutive week that a Covenant player has earned the award as Chris Cox was the honoree last week.
A senior from Grayson, Ga., Harvie went 3-0 in both singles and doubles play on the week to help the Scots to a 2-1 record. Harvie teamed with Chris Cox for three wins over Piedmont, Huntingdon, and LaGrange at the top doubles spot, increasing the tandem's winning streak to 14. In singles, Harvie collected three victories at the No. 1 spot over top players from Piedmont, Huntingdon, and LaGrange.
Harvie also earned a region ranking from the ITA during the week as he is No. 19 in the Atlantic South poll. The ranking marks a third straight year that Harvie has been ranked at least once.
For the year, Harvie is 13-2 overall, 12-1 in dual matches, and he is a perfect 7-0 in conference play. In doubles play with Cox, Harvie is 16-2 for the year and 15-1 in dual matches-only, tying a single-season program record. Harvie is two wins shy of 50 for his career in singles play and has tallied 51 doubles wins.
Covenant (13-3, 7-1 USA South) broke a program record for wins in a year with Saturday's victory over LaGrange. The Scots are back in action on Wednesday at Berry (5 p.m.).
