LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Taylor Galloway fought off three match points in the third set and rallied for a win at No. 4 singles to clinch a thrilling, 5-4 victory for the Covenant men's tennis team over LaGrange on Saturday at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
The win is the 13th for Covenant (13-3, 7-1 USA South) breaking a program record for wins, set just last year. The victory also keeps the Scots atop the USA South West Division standings with one week left in the conference regular season. The seven conference wins ties a program record, also set last season, for league victories in a year.
Galloway trailed 5-2 in the third set and with the match tied at 4-4. But the freshman calmly worked himself back into the contest set against John Mitchell Benton and rallied for a 7-5 set victory. Galloway claimed the match by a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 score. The singles win was Galloway's eighth of the year.
Covenant took a 2-1 match lead after three tightly played doubles matches. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox won a 14th straight doubles match as they were 8-6 winners over Mitchell Corley and Alan Valdez at the top spot. Paxton Haggerty and Trey Wood took an 8-5 win over Benton and Trevor McLemore at the third flight, but LaGrange got a point with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Harvie and Cox gave the Scots a 4-1 lead with wins at the top two flights. Harvie was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Corley at No. 1, while Cox won 6-1, 6-2 over Will Thompson at No. 2.
LaGrange rallied and took the next three completed singles matches to tie the score at 4-4. Galloway they dropped his first set again Benton before pulling off the comeback victory and giving the Scots the match win.
Covenant will head out of USA South play on Wednesday when it travels to Berry. First serve is set for 5 p.m. in Mount Berry, Ga.
