FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Following a perfect week in both singles and doubles play, Covenant men's tennis senior Chris Cox was named USA South Player of the Week for the period ending on March 25, announced the conference on Monday afternoon.
The honor is the second in Cox's career. He is also the second Covenant player to garner a weekly accolade from the conference this season, joining Matthew Harvie (Feb. 19).
A senior from Maitland, Fla., Cox went 2-0 in both singles and doubles play to help the Scots to a perfect week. Cox was key in the Scots' 6-3 win over Piedmont on Friday as he bested Jackson Hill 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles spot after teaming with Harvie for an 8-3 win over Hill and Nathan Metzger at No. 1 doubles. In an 8-1 win over Brevard on Saturday, Cox was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over Tim Hengst at the second singles flight and again worked with Harvie for an 8-6 win over Hengst and Tom Mittring in doubles.
With his victory over Brevard's Hengst in singles play on Saturday, Cox tied a program record with his 50th career singles victory. Cox is 50-30 all-time in singles play.
For the year, Cox leads the team with a 10-2 singles record in dual matches and is 11-3 overall. Cox and Harvie have teamed for a 13-2 overall record as the top doubles team for the Scots.
Covenant (11-2, 5-0 USA South) is off to its best start in program history and is just one win shy of tying a program record for wins in a year. The Scots travel to USA South foe Piedmont on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
