CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Covenant men's tennis senior Chris Cox tied a program record for career singles victories and the Scots won for a 10th time in the last 11 matches with an 8-1 victory over Brevard on Saturday afternoon at the Zan Guerry Tennis Center at Baylor School in Chattanooga.
The match was moved away from Lookout Mountain due to expected rain on Saturday afternoon.
Cox tallied his 50th career singles win with his 6-2, 7-5 victory over Tim Hengst at the No. 2 spot. The win total ties Cox atop the program's career singles wins leaderboard with Josh Jeremiah, a standout who played for the Scots from 2008-11. Cox is 50-30 all-time in singles play for his career, a .625 winning percentage.
Covenant (11-2) had to fight off some close matches to get the victory. Cox and Matthew Harvie were 8-6 winners at the top doubles spot over Brevard's Tom Mittring and Hengst, while Logan Hull and Taylor Galloway also took an 8-6 win at the second spot over Will Christiansen and David Bumgarner. Trey Wood and Paxton Haggerty completed the doubles sweep for the Scots as they eased past Jaume Reig and Florian Peyssonneaux 8-1.
In singles play, it was the bottom of the order that clinched the victory. Haggerty's 6-1, 6-0 win over Bumgarner at the No. 5 spot gave Covenant a 4-0 match lead. Ben Tonkel sealed the deal with his 6-2, 6-0 win over Peyssonneaux at the sixth position.
Harvie was bested in a tough, three-set match to Mittring as Brevard (3-11) took its lone point of the match after Mittring's 3-6, 7-6(2), 1-0 (10-4) win at the top singles flight. The loss didn't faze the Scots as Hull defeated Christiansen 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 and Galloway bested Reig 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4.
Covenant returns to USA South play on Wednesday with a trip to face Piedmont in Demorest, Ga. Covenant defeated Piedmont on Friday by a 6-3 final. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
