LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's tennis team officially began its season on Saturday with a 7-2 victory over NCAA Division II member Christian Brothers at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
The match is the only scheduled dual match of the fall season for Covenant (1-0). It was also the opener for Christian Brothers (0-1).
Covenant got off to a fast start by sweeping doubles play. The No. 1 tandem of Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox routed the visiting Bucs' Lorenzo Maccarini and Javier Saez 8-1. Logan Hull and Trey Wood took care of Abel Kim and Nick Cotros 8-4 at the second spot, while Ben Tonkel and Trey Wetjen were 8-5 winners at No. 3 over Cory Cox and Max Wilson.
The Scots found points a bit harder in the singles part of the match. Four of the six matches went into three sets. Harvie won the match clincher with his 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Maccarini at the top spot. Hull was the only Covenant player to win without going three sets as he downed Kim 6-3, 6-4.
Wood and Tonkel also came away with third set victories. Wood was a 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) winner over Cotros at the fourth spot and Tonkel took down Wilson 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) at the fifth position.
Covenant will have several players compete in the ITA Regional tournament set for Sept. 29 and 30 in Rome, Ga.
