CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Facing Division I neighbor Chattanooga, the Covenant men's tennis team fell to the Mocs 7-0 on Saturday evening at the Racquet Club in Chattanooga.
Covenant falls to 2-2 on the year, while UTC improves to 3-6. It was the second straight year the Scots and Mocs have squared off on the court.
Chattanooga took the match's first point in double play by winning all three matches. Playing by NCAA Division I rules, one point is awarded to the team that wins the most doubles matches. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox hung with the Mocs' No. 1 duo of Nic Wilson and Niklas Gerdes before falling 6-3. At the third flight, Connor Shimmel and Trey Wood had an early lead on Simon Bustamante and Austin Boaz, but ultimately fell 6-4.
The Mocs then swept through singles play to complete the shutout. Harvie fell at No. 1 6-4, 6-2 to Lucas Plesky, while Logan Hull was defeated 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 position by Derrick Brown. Micah Fox was downed by Max Grobbelaar 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles spot.
Covenant will play three matches away from home next weekend. The Scots face Millsaps on Friday at 12 p.m. EST in Jackson, Miss., before facing Rhodes (10 a.m. EST) and Hendrix (3 p.m. EST) on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.
