LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's tennis team opened the 2016-17 season on Saturday with a 7-2 victory over former conference foe Milligan at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
Covenant, playing its only dual match of the fall, goes to 1-0 on the year. Milligan, a current NAIA and Appalachian Athletic Conference member, drops to 0-1.
The Scots took all three doubles matches to gain a 3-0 lead. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox picked up where they left off last season with an 8-0 rout of Josh Crain and Joc Lyttle at the No. 1 spot. Newcomers Logan Hull and Micah Fox had little trouble at the No. 2 position with an 8-1 win, while Trey Wood and Connor Shimmel fought off Conly Shults and Will Blackmarr for a 9-8 (4) win at No. 3.
In singles play, Harvie was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 1, while Cox took care of Lyttle 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Fox and Hull also took wins in singles play with Fox defeating Dan Peacock 6-1, 6-2 and Hull dispatched Griffin Leonard 6-2, 6-4.
Covenant will send players to the ITA Regional tournament on Firday, Sept. 30-Saturday, Oct. 1 in Sewanee, Tenn.
