CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's tennis team stayed in the hunt for a USA South Tournament berth with a 5-4 victory over LaGrange in conference action at the Manker Patten Tennis Club on Friday night.

Connor Shimmel had the match-clincher for Covenant at the No. 4 singles spot. Covenant moves to 5-12 overall and 4-5 in the USA South. The Scots sit just outside the sixth, and final, spot in the conference standings to qualify for the league tournament.

Covenant got off to a good start as the Scots took two of the three doubles matches. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox took an 8-4 victory over Mitchell Corley and Henrique Sizenando at the top doubles spot. Shimmel and Trey Wood were 8-6 winners at No. 2 giving the Scots the lead heading into singles.

Harvie and Cox cruised to victories at the top two singles positions. Harvie bested Corley 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, while Cox took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sizenando at the No. 2 spot.

Shimmel then came through at the No. 4 spot to give Covenant the victory. Shimmel took the first set 6-4, before falling in the second 6-0 but rebounded for a 6-2 win in the third to secure the match win for the Scots.
