KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's tennis team picked up its first two victories of the season on Saturday with a pair of 9-0 wins over Maryville and Johnson.
Covenant improves to 2-5 on the year and the victory over Maryville moved the Scots to 1-2 in conference play.
Against Maryville, Covenant swept all three doubles as Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox combined for an 8-1 win at the top spot. Trey Wood and Connor Shimmel were 8-3 winners at No. 2, while Dan Madden and Travis Hutchinson took an 8-2 win at No. 3.
Harvie continued his solid singles play against USA South foes with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Daniel Silva at the No. 1 position. Cox took a three-set win over Markos Herrera 7-6, 5-7, 10-6 at No. 2 and Wood won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. The bottom half of the lineup also produced as Shimmel, Madden and Hutchinson all took wins to help in the shutout victory.
In the Johnson match, Covenant set the tone early with three doubles wins. At No. 1, Harvie and Cox won 8-1, while Madden and Hutchinson were also 8-1 winners at No. 3. Shimmel and Wood combined for an 8-5 win at the second spot.
In singles play, the Scots cruised in all six matches. Cox had a 6-0, 6-0 win and Hutchinson took a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Harvie won 6-3, 6-0 while Wood was a 6-2, 6-0 winner. Shimmel won 6-0, 6-2 and Madden finished off the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Covenant will host Millsaps on Friday, March 4 on Lookout Mountain. Matches start at 4 p.m.
