LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's tennis team picked up its biggest win over the last few years with a 5-4 upset of perennial USA South power Methodist on Friday afternoon at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
The win snaps a two-match losing streak for the Scots and moves them to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the USA South. Methodist drops to 6-4 on the year and 3-2 in league play.
Covenant started off on the right foot as it took two of the three doubles matches. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox knocked off Asa Britt and Seth Grant 8-3 at the No. 1 spot, while Michael O'Brien and Dan Madden defeated Max Mancini and Mark Tarentino 8-5 at No. 2.
In singles play, it was Cox's three set victory at No. 2 that sealed the win for the Scots. Cox rallied after dropping the first set to come away with the match-clincher 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Harvie bested Mancini 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and O'Brien was victorious at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Grant.
Methodist would take the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles for the final tally.
Covenant will be back on the courts on Saturday morning when it hosts North Carolina Wesleyan. Match time is slated for 11 a.m.
