CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- For the first time in three years, the Covenant men's tennis team claimed a season-opening victory as the Scots knocked off two-year school Gadsden State 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the indoor courts at McCallie School in Chattanooga.
Covenant (1-0) won two of the three doubles matches and then four of the six in the singles round to earn the win.
Matthew Harvie teamed with Michael O'Brien at the No. 1 doubles spot and the duo took an 8-2 victory. At No. 3 doubles, Roy Anderson and Travis Hutchinson combined for an 8-6 win as Covenant took a 2-1 lead into singles matches.
Chris Cox would clinch the match for the Scots with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kevin Triplett at No. 2 singles. Harvie collected a win at the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-2 over Dakota Harris and O'Brien earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Matt Wade. John Granholm dropped the first set in his match at No. 4 before rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory over Jordan Younghouse.
Gadsden would take singles matches at Nos. 5 and 6.
Covenant will be back on the court next Saturday when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to face Birminham Southern and Millsaps.
