MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's tennis team kept alive a possible berth to the USA South Tournament next week with a resounding 9-0 win at Maryville on Thursday afternoon.
The Scots move to 2-15 overall and 1-7 in league play with the victory. Covenant must defeat Averett on Friday to have a chance of finishing in the top eight in the conference and qualify for the league tournament. Maryville falls to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the USA South.
O'Brien and Shimmel teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 victory, while O'Brien took a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles and Shimmel earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 5 spot. At No. 2 doubles, Portlock and Roy Anderson dispatched Maryville's duo 8-3. Portlock claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and Roy Anderson won in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0, at No. 4 singles.
At No. 3 doubles, Jonah Anderson and Travis Hutchinson won a hard-fought 9-8 match. Jonah Anderson also won at No. 3 singles in shutout fashion 6-0, 6-0. Jonathan Turner rounded out the sweep of Maryville with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles.
Covenant will host USA South foe Averett on Friday to wrap-up the conference regular season. Matches are set to start at 4 p.m.
