Streak Snapped: Men's Tennis Wins on New Courts

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's tennis team picked a good time to pick up their first victory of the season. The Scots opened up brand new on-campus tennis courts on Saturday by defeating Johnson 9-0.

Earlier in the day, Covenant fell to LaGrange 5-4. The loss is the third straight 5-4 defeat in USA South play.

Covenant improves to 1-9 overall on the year after the day's matches and 0-3 in the USA South. The win over LaGrange snapped a 22-match losing streak spanning over the last two years. The Scots' last win before Saturday came on April 17, 2012 against LaGrange.

In the day's first match against LaGrange, Covenant took two of the three doubles matches. No. 1 tandem Michael O'Brien and Connor Shimmel won 9-7 over the Panthers' Brett Piland and Wade Fegley. At the No. 2 spot, Roy Anderson and Frank Portlock knocked off Alex Glass and Steve Wendel 9-8.

In singles play, Portlock won in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 over Glass at the No. 2 position. Anderson also won in three sets at No. 4 singles against Wendel 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Against Johnson, the Scots had little trouble in getting their first victory of the year. O'Brien and Shimmel won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Jonah Anderson and Travis Hutchinson recorded an 8-0 win at No. 3. Portlock and Anderson picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 2.

O'Brien took care of business at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win, while Portlock took a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 2 position and Anderson notched a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3. Nathan Hernandez won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and Jonathan Turner took a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Rounding out the shutout victory was Jay Pannkuk's three-set victory at No. 6 4-6, 6-0, 10-2.

Covenant will return to action on Tuesday against non-conference foe Berry. Those matches begin at 3 p.m. on Lookout Mountain.
