ROME, Ga. -- Following a three-goal week, Covenant men's soccer sophomore Mercer Stout was named USA South Player of the Week for the period ending on Sept. 1, announced the conference on Monday.
The weekly honor is the first in Stout's career and it also marks the first time since 2014 that a Scot has collected the award in men's soccer.
A sophomore from Signal Mountain, Tenn., Stout tallied three goals and both game-winning scores in a 2-0 week for the Scots. In a 3-2 win over Randolph on Friday, Stout scored the eventual game-winner in the 55th minute to give Covenant a 3-0 lead. In a 6-1 victory over Southern Virginia on Saturday, Stout tallied a goal in the 15th minute to give the Scots the lead for good and added an insurance score in the 48th minute.
Stout's two goals on Saturday marked his first career multi-goal match. The sophomore has already eclipsed his goal output from his freshman season.
Covenant won both matches over the weekend at the Maryville Bicentennial Kick-off Classic to start the season 2-0. The Scots are back in action on Friday (7 p.m.) against Berry in the home opener.
