CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's soccer team struck early and often in the first half and used a pair of goals from senior Ethan Pettit to defeat Huntingdon, 5-0, on Friday night at Chattanooga Christian School.
Before the match, four seniors (Carl Simakoff, Jonathan Barrett, Christopher Kitchen, and Pettit) along with junior Josiah McDaniel were honored for their contributions and dedication to the program throughout their careers. The group has helped the Scots to 21 wins over the last two seasons.
The victory for Covenant (12-5-1, 9-2-1 USA South) is the fifth in a row to conclude the regular season for the Scots and leaves open a possibility of a USA South West Division title. Covenant can finish no worse than second in the West Division, but could claim the top spot if Maryville draws or loses to William Peace on Saturday.
Pettit scored the first and last goal for the Scots on Senior Night. In the first half, Pettit gave Covenant a 1-0 lead as he deposited a short cross from Josh Brower into the back of the net in the 10th minute of play. In the 69th minute, Pettit was played a ball into the box from Connor McGimsey and his attempt slipped through the hands of Huntingdon keeper Zak Heino and dropped into the net for the score. The goals were the second and third of the season for Pettit.
Covenant scored three other goals in the opening 45 minutes as it outshot the visiting Hawks 12-1 in the period. Brower collected his fourth goal of the year as he dribbled into the box where he found enough space to get off an attempt that got by Huntingdon keeper Zach Sheahan to make it 2-0 in the 12th minute. The goal was Brower's fourth of the year.
In the 23rd minute, Mercer Stout ripped a shot from long distance that found the back of the net to make it 3-0. The goal was Stout's second of the year. Parker Owen had a similar score in the 43rd minute as his distance attempt blasted into the net for a 4-0 edge. The goal was Owen's sixth of the year.
Defensively, Covenant limited Huntingdon's opportunities to earn the team's third straight shutout. Paul Lemay and Henry Hooks combined for the clean sheet as Lemay made one save before Hooks made a pair of saves in the second half.
Covenant outshot Huntingdon (3-13-1, 2-9-1 USA South) 17-6 on the night. Pettit and Owen had four shots apiece.
Covenant will host a USA South Tournament first round match on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Time and opponent will be announced later this weekend.
