LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Carl Simakoff scored in the final minute to break a tie score and lift the Covenant men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard.
Covenant moves to 6-9-1 overall. Brevard, a member of the USA South but reclassifying to NCAA Division III, drops to 4-7 on the year.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the final minute, Simakoff headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from Ethan Pettit to give the Scots a 2-1 lead. The goal was Simakoff's third of the year and his first game-winning score of the season. Pettit was credited with the assist, his first of the year.
After a scoreless first half, one in which Covenant maintained control of the action, the Scots got on the board in the 55th minute. Isaac Johnson headed in a cross from Josh Brower to give Covenant a 1-0 lead. The goal was Johnson's second of the year and the assist to Brower was his seventh.
In the 71st minute, Brevard got a fortunate bounce and even the score at 1-1. Ty Stubbs took a shot from inside the 18-yard box and had the ball deflect into the back of the net for the score. Both teams would have decent looks at the net in the final 20 minutes before Simakoff's game-winner in the final minute of play.
The teams combined for 40 shots in the match, each team taking 20. Johnson and Simakoff each took five shots for Covenant, while Jorge Jimenez took seven for the visiting Tornados. Jonathan Crossman made six saves at the net for Covenant and Brevard's Patrick Hall made six saves.
Covenant will head to Montgomery, Ala., on Tuesday for a matchup with Huntingdon at 5 p.m. EDT.
