FERRUM, Va. -- The Covenant men's soccer team dropped its second straight one-goal contest as host Ferrum notched the game-winner in the 97th minute to defeat the Scots 2-1 on Friday evening in USA South action.
Covenant (2-6, 0-3 USA South) has lost four straight overall. Ferrum improves to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Jesse Riggs put away his second goal of the year. Covenant would hold that lead until the final minutes of the opening half. Ferrum tied the match at 1-1 in the 43rd minute when Keith Ricks got one past Covenant keeper Jonathan Crossman, assisted by Graham Holley.
Both teams had chances in the second half, but neither could find the back of the net. The teams combined for 44 shots on the night as Ferrum held a slight 23-21 advantage in the category.
Ferrum would capitalize in the seventh minute of the first overtime session. Moore Dolue headed one from short range, assisted by Michael Lyons, to give the host Panthers the victory.
Crossman made seven saves at the net for Covenant, while Ferrum keeper Marco Rivera tallied six saves. Josh Brower led Covenant with four shots attempted and Riggs and Christopher Kitchen had three apiece.
Covenant travels down the road to Danville, Va., to take on Averett on Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
