JACKSON, Miss. -- Playing three matches within a span of four days is tough on any soccer team, but the Covenant men's soccer team is thriving in that scenario so far. Josh Brower scored in the 20th minute and that stood up as Covenant defeated Belhaven 1-0 on Friday night in Jackson.
It is the second straight shutout and 1-0 victory for Covenant (2-2) after the Scots took down Sewanee on Wednesday. The Scots will try to make it a perfect week on Saturday when they travel across Jackson to face Millsaps.
The win was also the first non-conference road victory for the Scots since Sept. 12, 2014, a 4-0 victory at Sewanee. It also snapped a three-match winless streak against Belhaven.
Belhaven dropped to 0-1-2 on the year with the loss.
Brower scored the eventual game-winner in the 20th minute when he took a pass from Jesse Riggs and then found the back of the net past Belhaven keeper Thomas Blake. The goal was Brower's first of the year.
From there it was a defensive match for both teams. Covenant managed just six total shots on the night, while the host Blazers didn't fare much better as they tallied seven. Jonathan Crossman made two saves for Covenant and collected his second straight shutout in the process. Blake also made two saves for Belhaven.
Covenant looks to make it three straight wins on Saturday when the Scots travel to face Millsaps. Match time is set for 8 p.m. EDT.
