LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Led offensively by two freshmen and a sophomore, the Covenant men's soccer team showed some progress during the 2016 season. The Scots finished 5-11-2 for a second straight year, but were 5-5 in the USA South and qualified for the conference tournament.
Freshman Jesse Riggs was the catalyst on the offensive half of the field as he led the team in total points with 18 after accumulating seven goals and a team-best four assists. Sophomore Carl Simakoff led the Scots with a career-high eight goals and freshman Josh Brower totaled four goals on the year.
Riggs was a USA South Rookie of the Week award winner on Oct. 10, while Nate Mackey was Covenant's representative on the conference's All-Sportsmanship team. The team was also awarded the USA South Sportsmanship Award for a fourth straight year.
MATCHES OF THE YEAR
After a tough start to the season, Covenant found its groove in October as the Scots won four of five matches from Oct. 7-18. In that stretch, the Scots scored back-to-back 6-1 victories over Huntingdon and LaGrange. It was the first time since 2001 that a Covenant team had scored at least six goals in consecutive matches.
Simakoff had five goals in those two matches, with a hat trick coming in the LaGrange contest. Riggs had two goals and three assists combined in the two matches and would earn USA South Rookie of the Week honors in the following week for his effort.

The 4-1 stretch for Covenant was capped with a 1-0 overtime victory at Piedmont on Oct. 18. The Scots and Lions played to a defensive battle through the first 90 minutes of the contest, but Covenant came out on top less than three minutes into the extra session on a Simakoff game-winner.
