FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Covenant men's soccer freshman Jesse Riggs has been named the USA South Rookie of the Week for the period ending Oct. 9, 2016, announced the conference on Monday afternoon.
The honor is the first in Riggs' career and he becomes the first Covenant player to earn a men's soccer weekly award this season. Riggs is also the first men's soccer freshman to earn a rookie of the week accolade from the USA South since Covenant joined the league in 2013.
A freshman from Chesapeake, Va., Riggs helped Covenant to a 2-0-1 record over the week with two goals and three assists. Riggs had a goal and two assists in Covenant's 6-1 win over Huntingdon on Friday as he scored in the 26th minute and assisted on goals from Josh Brower and Matt Morefield. In Saturday's 6-1 win over LaGrange, Riggs scored in the 76th minute on a penalty kick and also assisted on Carl Simakoff's second goal in the 63rd minute.
For the year, Riggs is second on the team with six goals, but leads the team with four assists and 16 total points.
Covenant will host Greensboro on Friday at 4 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
