LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Carl Simakoff recorded his first career hat trick and the Covenant men's soccer team scored in bunches for a second straight day as the Scots defeated LaGrange 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard.
Covenant (3-8-2, 3-4 USA South) has scored 12 goals over the last two matches and has its first winning streak of the season.
A day after scoring two goals, Simakoff notched a hat trick to bring his season goal total to seven, which leads the team. Simakoff started the scoring barrage in the 16th minute as he put away an unassisted score giving Covenant a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Simakoff was at it again as he scored in the 63rd minute, assisted by Jesse Riggs, and then again in the 71st minute, assisted by Josh Brower.
After Covenant took a 3-0 lead in Simakoff's goal in the 63rd minute, LaGrange (3-8-1, 1-4-1 USA South) made it 3-1 as Errick Sturm got one past Covenant keeper Paul Lemay.
Simakoff answered in the 71st minute, and then Covenant added two more tallies as Riggs scored in the 76th minute and Joseph Franks in the 88th minute. Isaac Johnson was credited with the assist on Franks' goal after crossing the ball into the 18-yard box.
Covenant dominated the shot count taking a season-high 25 shots and holding a 25-9 edge in the category. Lemay made three saves for the Scots, while LaGrange keeper Bonner Brooks made five.
The Scots will play host to USA South member Greensboro on Friday, Oct. 14 at Scotland Yard. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
