MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Maryville scored three goals in the final eight minutes of the first half and defeated the Covenant men's soccer team 4-1 on Friday night in USA South action.
The loss drops Covenant to 1-8-1 overall and 1-4 in the USA South. Maryville goes to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in league play. The match was Maryville head coach Pepe Fernandez's 1,000th as he has spent 28 years as the men's head coach and 26 years on the women's side.
Covenant held the potent Maryville offense in check through much of the first half. But Maryville got on the board in the 37th minute on a Cody VanKerschaever goal, assisted by Caleb Lucas, to put the host Scots ahead 1-0. Covenant answered back less than a minute later when Jesse Riggs put one into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1 in the 38th minute. The goal was Riggs' fourth of the year and second in as many matches.
Maryville would tack on two more goals in the final minutes of the first half to gain a 3-1 lead. Tim Baker scored in the 41st minute and Lucas added a goal of his own in the final minute of the half to give Maryville a two-goal advantage. The northern Scots then tallied the final goal early in the second half as VanKerschaever notched his second score of the match to make it 4-1.
Jonathan Crossman made six saves for Covenant on the night, while Maryville's Ryan Jorgensen also collected six saves. Maryville held a 17-9 shot advantage.
Covenant will travel to Sewanee on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. EDT.
