LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Carl Simakoff and Josh Brower each scored their first goals of the season, but visiting Averett scored late in both the first and second halves to come away with a 3-2 win over the Covenant men's soccer team on Friday afternoon at Scotland Yard.

Covenant drops to 0-4-1 overall and 0-1 in the USA South, while Averett goes to 2-6 on the year with a 1-0 mark in league play.

Averett took a 1-0 lead in the third minute of play when Tobias Andreasson found the back of the net from 20 yards out on a free kick giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The goal was Andreasson's fourth of the year.

Covenant responded and maintained control for much of the first half. The Scots broke through in the 33rd minute when Simakoff put away an attempt from short distance as Josiah McDaniel pressured Averett keeper Austin Bramhall and slid a pass to Simakoff for the score. The goal was Simakoff's first of the year and McDaniel's first assist.

Averett grabbed a 2-1 lead right before halftime when Oscar Lara's throw-in bounded into the box and Daniel Surley scored from 12 yards out with one second remaining in the period.

In the second half, Covenant knotted the score at 2-2 in the 56th minute on Brower's first collegiate goal. Brower received a through ball from Jesse Riggs and then slid his shot past Bramhall from the far left side of the box.

But Averett had the final answer as Ville Hautakangas scored from inside the 18-yard box on a cross from Lara in the 85th minute giving the visiting Cougars a 3-2 lead.

Covenant outshot Averett 15-11 in the contest. Jonathan Crossman (0-3) made five saves after coming on in the second half, while Bramhall (2-6) made three in 90 minutes of action. Brower led Covenant with five shots and Nate Mackey added three attempts.

Covenant will host USA South foe William Peace on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Scotland Yard. The USA South Sportsmanship Trophy will be presented to Covenant before the match.
