LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- In the second match of the day at the David Taaffe Invitational at Scotland Yard, the Covenant men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with non-conference foe Belhaven.
The draw snaps a two-match losing streak for the Scots, who stand at 0-2-1 on the year. Belhaven goes to 0-1-1 overall.
Both teams had difficulty putting together any consistent attacks throughout the match. Belhaven held a slim 10-9 edge in total shots taken, while both teams were able to put just two shots on target in 110 minutes of play. Henry Paris and TJ Munzel had Covenant's two shots on goal, and the Blazers also put two on target.
The physical play on the field resulted in 40 total fouls called, with Belhaven being hit with 25 of those. The visiting Blazers were also assessed three yellow cards.
It briefly appeared as if Covenant had taken the lead with just 16 seconds left in the second half, but Josh Brower's goal was negated after the referees consulted with each other and determined that Brower was offsides.
Paul Lemay (0-0-1) made his first career start and completed a clean sheet with two saves for his first shutout. Blazers keeper Josh Gates (0-1-1) also played the entire match and made two saves.
The Scots will face Millsaps on Saturday at Scotland Yard to conclude the David Taaffe Invitational. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Maryville-Belhaven match which begins at 5 p.m.
