Men's Soccer to Host David Taaffe Invitational This Weekend

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's soccer program will host the David Taaffe Invitational this Friday and Saturday at Scotland Yard. Belhaven, Maryville and Millsaps join the host Scots to round out the four-team field.

No tobacco, alcohol or animals are allowed at any athletic events held at Covenant College.

- Belhaven Blazers (0-1, 0-0 ASC): The Blazers are coming off a 2-1 loss to Centenary in their season opener last Thursday. Nicolas Cornejo scored the lone goal for the Blazers, assisted by Johnathan Goliday, in the loss. Belhaven went 14-4-2 in 2015, including a win over Covenant at Scotland Yard, and advanced to the NCCAA National Tournament.

- Covenant Scots (0-2, 0-0 USA South): The host Scots come into the weekend with an 0-2 overall record after suffering losses to Berry (2-1) and Wilmington (2-0) last week. Nate Mackey has the lone goal on the year for Covenant. The Scots defeated Millsaps 3-2 in the 2014 David Taaffe Invitational. Covenant is 2-4-2 against Belhaven all-time and 1-1 against Millsaps.

- Maryville Scots (1-1, 0-0 USA South): Led by 28th-year head coach Pepe Fernandez and 2015 All-American Caleb Lucas, Maryville was picked third in the USA South preseason poll and stands at 1-1 on the year. Maryville split a pair of matches at the Sonny Carter Invitational last weekend with a 3-2 win over Oglethorpe followed by a 2-0 loss to host Emory.

- Millsaps Majors (1-2, 0-0 SAA): An NCAA Tournament participant a year ago, Millsaps is off to a 1-2 start in 2016. The Majors got into the win column their last time out with a 3-2 victory over Mobile. Alex Bourland, Matt Crooker and Gabriel Ryce all recorded goals in the victory. Millsaps has suffered losses to Mary Hardin-Baylor (1-0) and Concordia (Texas) (2-0) earlier this season.
