LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 2016 Covenant men's soccer team is set to play 17 regular season matches, with 10 of those slated for Scotland Yard, as head coach Nathan Pifer recently announced his program's schedule.
Highlighting the 10 home matches will be the David Taaffe Invitational on Sept. 9-10. Maryville, Belhaven and Millsaps will round out the four-team field. Covenant hosts Belhaven on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. and then Millsaps on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
The season opener is set for Thursday, Sept. 1 against regional foe Berry at Scotland Yard at 7 p.m.
Homecoming weekend on Sept. 16-17 will also mark the opening of the USA South slate. The Scots play Averett on Sept. 16 at 4 p.m., before hosting William Peace on Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. to round out the Homecoming schedule.
After spending nearly three weeks on the road, Covenant will play four home matches in the span of eight days. The Scots will face Huntingdon (Oct. 7), LaGrange (Oct. 8), defending USA South regular season champion Greensboro (Oct. 14) and Ferrum (Oct. 15) during that stretch. The home and regular season finale is set for Oct. 22 against national power Emory.
The USA South Tournament kicks off on Oct. 29 as the top four seeds in the eight-team field will host quarterfinal round matches. Semifinals and the championship will be played on Nov. 4-5 at the highest remaining seed.
- The David Taaffe Invitational will be the second time Covenant has hosted the event. The first Invitational was in 2014 and Covenant went 1-1 with a win over Millsaps and a loss to Wilmington (Ohio).
- Belhaven will make its second straight trip to Lookout Mountain. The Blazers also played at Scotland Yard in 2015 and took a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the host Scots.
- Covenant will face two NCAA Tournament teams from 2015 in Methodist (Sept. 24) and Millsaps (Sept. 10).
