Maryville Blanks Men's Soccer in USA South Tournament

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- In a rematch of last year's USA South Tournament championship, the Covenant men's soccer team was on the losing end this time falling 5-0 to No. 3 seed Maryville in a quarterfinal round match on Saturday afternoon.

The loss ends the year for Covenant as the Scots, who earned the No. 6 seed, finish 5-11-2 overall. Maryville (14-2-2) moves on to the semifinal round on Friday, Nov. 6 and will face the winner of Methodist and Ferrum.

Maryville, who defeated Covenant 2-1 just three days ago in the regular season finale, received two goals from George Davies in the first half to build a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. In the second period, the host Scots scored three more times to extend the lead and secure the victory. Caleb Lucas, Bret Thomas and Hayden Puryear tallied the goals in the second half.

In his final collegiate match, senior keeper Daniel Kubin made a career-high 11 saves. Jonathan Crossman came on late and registered one save.

Mike Arango led Covenant with two shots taken, both were on target, while Henry Paris and Micah Masters tallied one shot apiece.

Maryville keeper Jon Taylor made two saves, while Luke Wheat made one as the duo combined for the shutout.
