MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- On Saturday night at Smith River Complex, the Covenant men's soccer team recorded their second win in a 2-1 victory over Ferrum in USA South action.
The Scots improve to 2-5 and 1-0 in league play, while Ferrum is now sitting at 3-5 overall and 2-1 in the USA South.
All three goals scored in the match came in the first half. Covenant senior Bryce Bartelt took a shot that went wide just 40 seconds into the game, and less than a minute later took another one that found the back of the net. This marks his second goal of the season, as well as his second career score.
Ferrum was able to tie the contest in the 21st minute, as Michael Midyette assisted a goal by Julian Ofori for his fourth goal of the season. The Scots answered back in the 28th minute with a Noah Wiersema goal - his second of the season. The senior now has nine goals in his career.
The Panthers had several opportunities to score an equalizer, but Scots keeper Daniel Kubin's six saves prevented Ferrum from tying. The senior had a clutch save on a penalty kick with just over 15 minutes left in regulation. The last two minutes of the game were particularly dangerous for the Scots, as the Panthers had two opportunities to tie the game in the form of corner kicks, though neither resulted in a goal.
Ferrum keeper Joe Martin had a total of four saves for the match, with two in each half. Covenant outshot Ferrum 15-9. Wiersema had five shots to lead the Scots while Nate Mackey attempted three.
The Scots will face Piedmont at Scotland Yard on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
