MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's soccer team was shutout for the first time in 2015 as Centre handed the Scots a 3-0 defeat on Saturday night in the finale of the Maryville College Fall Classic.
Centre (1-2) scored three times in the first half and would keep the Scots at bay offensively to earn its first win of the year. Covenant drops to 1-2 overall.
Centre's Alexander Garuba gave the Colonels the lead for good in the 12th minute of action as he found the back of the net, assisted by Harrison Dunn. In the 25th minute, Eric Muth made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal and less than two minutes later Fabien Celestin gave Centre a 3-0 edge with his goal.
Covenant had a few decent looks at the net. Bryce Bartelt's header in the 15th minute was saved and the senior had a shot later in the half that was blocked by the Centre defense. In the second half, Mike Arango's attempt was saved by Centre's Bailey Spade in the 82nd minute.
Covenant keeper Daniel Kubin made a season-high eight saves, while Spade made two for Centre.
Covenant will be back at Scotland Yard on Sept. 12 with Belhaven the opponent. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
