LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 61-team field of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament was revealed on Monday afternoon. Covenant will face Whitworth in the first round on Friday, Nov. 14 in Atlanta, Ga., at the Woodruff PE Center on the campus of Emory University. Game time will be 8:30 p.m.
The winner of the Covenant-Whitworth match will take on the winner of Emory and Berry in a second round contest.
This will be the first meeting between Covenant and Whitworth.
Whitworth University is located in Spokane, Wash., and is a member of the Northwest Conference. The Pirates come into the NCAA tournament with a 15-1-3 overall record and claimed their league's automatic berth with a 10-1-3 conference record. Whitworth was ranked 13th in last week's Top 25 by d3soccer.com.
This will be Whitworth's second appearance in the NCAA tournament in the last three years.
Micheal Ramos is the Pirates' leading goal-scorer with 13 on the season to go along with 12 assists. Three Pirate keepers have combined to allow 18 goals on the year (0.90 goals against average).
Whitworth is led by head coach Morgan Cathey who is in his second year. Cathey played at Azusa Pacific University as a goalkeeper helping lead the Cougars to an NAIA national championship in 2005.
The Scots claimed their first conference title at the Division III level last Saturday with a 2-0 win over Maryville in the USA South championship match.
Covenant will be making its first appearance in the Division III tournament and its ninth national tournament overall. The Scots have a record of 5-11-1 all-time in national tournaments.
The Scots are led by senior Snoopy Davidson. Davidson was named USA South Player of the Year and lived up to the billing in the conference tournament as he scored three goals and was named the tournament MVP. Davidson has scored eight goals over the last seven matches and had a streak of six straight games with a goal snapped in Saturday's title match.
Keeper Daniel Kubin has been solid all season at the net for the Scots. The junior has allowed just 15 goals for a 0.79 goals against average. Covenant has outscored its opponents 51-16 on the year.
Head coach Nathan Pifer is in his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater. Pifer has compiled a record of 71-43-12 during his tenure at Covenant and has won 270 matches as a head coach for a four-year men's program in his career.
Former Covenant soccer player Adam Neder is a professor of theology at Whitworth. Neder played for Brian Crossman from 1991-93.
