MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- For the first time in the Division III era, the Covenant men's soccer team claimed a conference title. Behind goals from Ian Meredith and Joel Friesen, the Scots knocked off Maryville 2-0 in the USA South championship match.
Covenant (15-4-2) will move on to the NCAA Tournament set to begin next week. The Scots will find out their first round opponent on Monday when the NCAA holds its Selection Show.
Meredith got the scoring going in the 11th minute with a penalty kick. After Hudson Brock was taken down inside the 18-yard box, the referee called a foul on Maryville resulting in the penalty kick chance. Meredith got his shot past a diving Jon Taylor at the net for Maryville giving Covenant a 1-0 advantage.
The Scots held that lead for much of the rest of the match. Keeper Daniel Kubin made a couple of key saves throughout the second half to preserve the shutout. Then in the 88th minute, Joel Friesen found the back of the net after the ball was deflected around inside the box. The goal was Friesen's eighth of the season.
Kubin made three saves for the Scots as he picked up his seventh shutout of the year. Covenant and Maryville each took 13 shots.
Snoopy Davidson led six players on the All-Tournament team as he garnered MVP honors. Kubin, Builder Brock, Russell Harrison, Friesen and Meredith also were recognized for their play throughout the tournament.
