LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Trying to retain the Highland Cup Trophy for a second straight year, the Covenant men's soccer team hosted rival Maryville on Wednesday night. Maryville's David Lethco scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute to lift the visiting Scots to a 2-1 victory in front of over 400 fans at Scotland Yard.
Since the trophy's inception, Maryville has defeated Covenant three times with Covenant's only win in the battle of the Scots coming last season.
Maryville struck quickly in this one as Tim Baker notched a goal in the fifth minute. Patrick Braxton's throw-in cleared most of the Covenant defense and Baker was able to sneak in behind to get his shot past Covenant keeper Shuler Polk.
Despite several chances in the first half for the home Scots, Maryville took its 1-0 lead going into halftime. Covenant had a 10-5 shot advantage, with seven of those being on goal, in the opening period
In the second half, Hudson Brock continued his stellar play with a goal in the 57th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Snoopy Davidson nearly put one into the net but the ball was saved and deflected by Maryville keeper Ben Munger out to Brock who trailed the play. The score was Brock's fifth of the season and fourth in the last two matches.
Lethco put Maryville in the lead for good at 2-1 with his goal in the 83rd minute. Braxton chipped a ball towards the box where Lethco was able to track it down and send it past a diving Polk.
Covenant had a couple of chances late, but Garrison Dale missed high on a shot from outside the box and a header by Davidson went just wide of the net.
Covenant peppered opposing keeper Munger with shots all night as the host Scots outshot the visitors 23-15 and 14-8 in shots on goal. Munger made 13 saves for Maryville. Polk made eight saves for Covenant.
Covenant will go out-of-conference for its next match as the Scots travel to Virginia to take on Emory & Henry on Monday, October 7. Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
