This week saw the Covenant athletic teams compete in several contests away from Lookout Mountain. The volleyball team went 2-2 with wins over Martin Methodist and Siena Heights, the men's soccer team had a victory over Hanover. Women's soccer, plagued by early season injuries, fell in three tough matches while the cross country teams finished sixth at the Sewanee Invitational. Below are this week's stats and notes
BY THE NUMBERS:
8: The number of career game-winning goals by men's soccer senior Matt Hudnut. Hudnut added to his total in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Hanover as he scored in the 87th minute to secure the win.
67: Total number of kills by volleyball sophomore Chelsea VanDyk over the course of four matches last week. VanDyk had 15 kills vs. Sewanee, 20 against Martin Methodist, 17 vs. Siena Heights and 15 more against Trevecca Nazarene and had a hitting percentage of .329 for the week. She was also named to the Scott Jones Classic all-tournament team.
1,000: The number of fans who turned out for David Taaffe Night at the men's soccer match on Tuesday night. All 200 t-shirts with Taaffe's name and number on the back along with 500 wristbands were given away before the match.
8-2-1: The combined record of the three opponents the women's soccer team had to play this week. The Lady Scots hung tough but dropped a pair of one-goal matches to Sewanee (3-0-1) and No. 16-ranked Centre (3-1) sandwiched between a 3-0 loss to Transylvania (2-1).
The volleyball team is now 4-2 in the Scott Joens Classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene. The Lady Scots also went 2-1 in the tournament last year... The cross country teams each finished sixth, but for a second straight week placed higher than USA South rival Maryville in the same event... The men's soccer team outshot each of the its three opponents this week, but finished the week with a 1-1-1 record
